Vancouver, 1971:
The Image Bank Postcard Show
EXHIBITION PROGRAM
I presented a curated selection from the
groundbreaking Image Bank project (1970-1978), which was founded by Michael Morris, Vincent Trasov (Mr. Peanut), and Gary Lee-Nova. Image Bank was a non-hierarchical, decentralized network that connected artists, images, and ideas through the international postal system, operating outside traditional gallery and museum environments. The exhibition revisits this innovative archive, which included collaborations with influential figures like General Idea, Robert Filliou, and Ray Johnson’s New York Correspondence School. By highlighting queer, campy, and ironic personas, Image Bank served as a precursor to today’s interconnected but impersonal digital art landscape. The studio's exhibition also featured material from the 1971 Image Bank Postcard Show, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the picture postcard with contributions from prominent artists such as Joseph Beuys, Sol Lewitt, and Yvonne Rainer.
