Thomas H. Kapsalis
Oblique Perspective

EXHIBITION PROGRAM

offered an intimate glimpse into the teaching legacy of Thomas H. Kapsalis (1925-2022), a revered professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC)

who influenced generations of artists. Running parallel to a memorial show at Corbett vs. Dempsey titled Nine Decades, this exhibition highlighted Kapsalis's unique contributions to modernist abstract art and pedagogy. The show featured two of Kapsalis's color chart paintings from the post-Vietnam era, alongside other teaching materials he created during his five-decade career. These works not only reflect Kapsalis's dedication to abstract art but also his innovative approach to teaching, where he often encouraged students to challenge their perceptions and explore complex color relationships. Oblique Perspective honored Kapsalis's dual role as a groundbreaking artist and an influential educator.
