Block-Printed Scarves with
KOEL Textiles

PROJECTS

In 2021, I embarked on a unique and enriching collaboration with Arshad Faruqui, the president of the Pakistani Craft Council and an IIT alumnus, who runs KOEL Textiles in Karachi. Our project aimed to bridge traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, focusing on creating a limited edition of block-printed scarves with artisans in Arshad’s studio. This partnership was not only an exploration of artistic boundaries but also a celebration of cultural heritage and modern design innovation.

  • Arshad and I began conversations about this project with a shared vision: to blend traditional  Pakistani block-printing techniques with contemporary pattern motifs. Our goal was to produce a series of unique, hand-crafted scarves that maintained the essence of traditional design while introducing modern aesthetics. The artisans at Arshad’s studio in Karachi would be the key players, bringing their skills and creativity to the forefront of this endeavor.

For the project, I designed two distinct patterns that served as the foundation for our  collaboration. These patterns were sent to the artisans, who transformed them into printing blocks. The unique aspect of this project was the creative freedom granted to the artisans. While the silk scarves adhered to traditional dimensions, with 6-inch borders and 2-inch side panels, the artisans were encouraged to experiment with the patterns.

Working virtually, we had engaging discussions about how to adapt the graphic forms into  block-printed designs. The artisans utilized their personal creative sensibilities, experimenting with various techniques such as rotating, layering, and isolating elements in different colors to create sub-patterns. This approach allowed each artisan to infuse their individuality into the scarves, resulting in a stunning collection of 30 unique, hand-dyed, and hand-printed pieces. To showcase the work, I hosted a pop-up event in my studio space.

Beyond producing beautiful scarves, this project was a satisfying experiment in collaboration and  creative exploration. By relinquishing some control over my patterns and allowing the artisans to interpret and adapt them, I gained insights into how creative collaboration can lead to unexpected and inspiring outcomes. The project highlighted the importance of trust and mutual respect in collaborative endeavors, where each participant brings their unique skills and perspectives to the fore.
